Japanese electronics giant Sony and automaker Honda to form joint venture to manufacture and sell electric vehicles, the two companies announced today.

Sony unveiled its first Vision-S electric sedan on the occasion of CES 2020. The SUV Vision-S 02 followed earlier this year at the same Las Vegas show. At CES in January, the division Sony Mobility has been announced to explore a potential entry into the electric car segmentand it seems that the Japanese manufacturer is already surrounding itself with more experienced partners.

What will be the roles of each company for these future electric cars?

Honda would design, manufacture and market the first model, while Sony would create the mobility services platform. The idea is to combine Honda’s skills in building and selling cars with Sony’s expertise in infotainment, mobility and image sensors.

Sony’s goal is to ‘fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology‘” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement. “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated vast global experience and achievements in the automotive industry over many years and continues to make groundbreaking advances in this field, we intend to build on our vision of ‘to make the mobility space an emotional space’, and to contribute to the evolution of mobility centered on safety, entertainment and adaptability”.

The two Japanese companies have indicated that they want to establish a joint venture this year and that sales of electric vehicles are expected to start in 2025. We know in particular that Sony plans to turn its cars into true home consoles on wheels, it will therefore be interesting to follow the fruits of this partnership carefully. However, for now, the companies have not released any further details regarding the technical characteristics of their first vehicle or on which platform it will be built.
