Sony, maker of the PS5, finally unveils its latest generation virtual reality headset, the PSVR 2.
In the field of consumer virtual reality, all eyes have been on Sony and its PSVR 2 for several months. After a few scattered images and a partial technical sheet unveiled at CES 2022, Sony is back on the front stage, with an official image and a first presentation to get your teeth into.
In a blog post, Sony reveals the futuristic design of the PSVR 2, dressed in white just like its latest generation console, the PS5, but also that of the firm’s first helmet, the PSVR 1. Sony also reveals to us that “when our design team created the PS5 console, they were already imagining the [PSVR 2]“. If we knew what the controllers would look like, we see them here from a new angle. The controllers, like the headset, have a spherical shape, like an orb, which obviously inspired Sony.
The firm informs us that this curvature was intended to remind the immersion offered to players, with a helmet that covers up to 110° of the field of vision. But it doesn’t just look good, it should also be comfortable for all gamers thanks to a few useful features. This is particularly the case of the lens adjustment wheel or the integrated motor dedicated to the return of the helmet. The firm also prides itself on having considerably improved the weight of the helmet but also the quality of the materials.
Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Designer at Sony, says: “When I started working on the design of the PlayStation VR2 headset, I immediately wanted to work on creating a ventilation system that provides good air circulation, like the ventilation grilles. ventilation of the PS5 console. Our engineers came up with this idea to improve ventilation and prevent lens fogging”
