Sony launches two new Walkman models — including gold-plated version

Sony seems to be confident in proving that the Walkman isn’t just a product of the past. So much so that, last Monday (13), the electronics giant announced two new models of the iconic music player, adapted to the most current technologies.

Both versions are aimed at the most demanding audiophiles, who value quality audio wherever they are. But that’s not all: in addition to the “luxury” factor — including a gold-plated model — the Japanese company seems to touch consumers’ hearts with the good old feeling of nostalgia.

NW-WM1AM2

Speaking of products, the most basic model (which carries the name of NW-WM1AM2) features an aluminum alloy housing to resist electrical noise and other interference. Still on the outside of the Walkman, the 5-inch touchscreen display makes it easier to choose tracks.

Like the premium model, the NW-WM1AM2 is equipped with S-Master HX technology for fidelity audio reproduction. Its low-resistance OFC cable promises low distortion and superior channel separation for an even more premium experience.

The most basic version, with 128 GB of expandable storage, supports several audio formats at up to 32-bit and 384 kHz. Other specs include Android 11 OS, Wi-Fi support for streaming, USB-C port, improved upscaling for CD-quality audio (16-bit, 44/48kHz), and 40-hour battery life when playing 96kHz FLAC audio.

NW-WM1ZM2

The NW-WM1ZM2, in turn, brings many of the configurations of the most basic version: S-Master HX technology, 5-inch touchscreen display, USB-C port, compatibility with various audio formats up to 32-bits and 384 kHz, Wi-Fi, audio upscaling and the same battery capacity.

The main differentiator — and perhaps the Walkman’s most eye-catching factor — is the gold-plated housing. In addition to bringing much more luxury to the product, the material has “a significant effect on the overall location of the enhanced sound and wider sound space,” according to Sony.

Not least, the premium model offers 256GB of expandable storage to store your entire music library.

Walkman price

As might be expected from devices made for discerning audiophiles, the prices are relatively steep. The most basic model costs US$ 1,399.99 (BRL 7.1 thousandin direct conversion), while the gold-plated Walkman goes out US$ 3,699.99 (BRL 18.9 thousand).
