Is a PlayStation Vita 2 in development? One of the video game giants is preparing the return to the business of handheld consoleswith a device that would be capable of running PS5 titles, according to rumors that have appeared on the Internet this week.
Surely you remember how the enormous versatility of modern smartphones ended up overthrowing portable consoles, as it also did with cheap cameras. Nintendo suffered a lot to keep the DS in the catalog due to the drop in sales and Sony’s was much worse. The last device of its kind was the original Vita from 2012. It only lasted seven years on the market and in 2019 it was discontinued with no plans for a successor.
But the market for handheld gaming machines has turned upside down in the last two years. Yes, it can be played on a smartphone, but the experience compared to a dedicated machine is much less no matter how powerful the mobile phone is.
The launch of a dozen portable consoles should not have gone unnoticed at Sony’s headquarters, where the revulsion brought about by Valve’s Steam Deck stands out, but also models from Chinese manufacturers such as AYA or One-Netbook. And in recent months others from Logitech, Razer and more recently the high-performance ASUS ROG Ally have been added.
PlayStation Vita 2?
Nintendo has the Switch that -without being exactly a handheld machine- can perfectly cover the game on the go and in fact is the best seller on the market if we think about this type of functionality. But Sony has none of it and we don’t think it will be sitting still any longer. The information at hand is not confirmed, but it makes sense.
At the beginning of the week there were rumors of a “Vita 2” that would focus on cloud games and now Insider Gaming claims to have an “exclusive” of the development of the portable console under the code name QLite. The console would not be a cloud streaming device, but would instead use remote playa feature present since the PS4 and that Sony has been pushing in recent weeks, to play current and future games on the PS5.
A Sony laptop would offer a more streamlined experience for its owners, as it would likely incorporate all the features of the controller. Playstation DualSense. In fact, a device that would look a lot like a PS5 controller, but with a huge 8-inch screen, is cited as the first prototypes. It would have adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and what is expected in a handheld machine, volume buttons and speakers, charging port and a high-performance wireless connection (Wi-Fi 6) to play remotely.
We will see. Sources say that the PlayStation Vita 2 is scheduled to launch in 2024, ahead of the PS5 Pro home console.
