Spanish company participates in Selfy, an autonomous vehicle safety improvement project

The Spanish company Ficosadedicated to R&D in the areas of development and production of advanced vision, safety and efficiency solutions for the automotive sector, will participate in the European project Selfyfocused on the Improving the safety of the autonomous and connected vehicle. The purpose of this project is the development of systems and tools that protect this type of vehicle from various security incidents, among which are cyberattacks.

Within the framework of this project, collaborative tools will be developed to generate, collect and monitor data for threat detection, as well as to increase the resilience and response capacity of vehicles to online threats. But also against other problems that may lead to a service interruption.

All this guaranteeing the privacy, confidentiality and integrity of the autonomous and connected mobility systems. But these systems will not only help make vehicles with an Internet connection safer, but will also allow the sector to advance significantly on a technological level.

A group of entities is working on the Selfy project, led by the Eurecat Technology Center. It is currently made up of 16 partners from eight countries: Spain, France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia and Turkey. As a member of this group, Ficosa will be in charge of contributing his experience in vision systems for autonomous driving, as well as in data privacy protection. To do this, he will be in charge of the processes of design and development of vehicle perception systems abroad. Also of the Artificial Intelligence models that are needed to detect pedestrians and objects located on the road that may be vulnerable in the presence of a vehicle.

These are the only areas of Selfy in which Ficosa will work, since it will also participate in the creation of the interface of the perception system with the V2X communication module of the vehicle, as well as in the development of cooperative knowledge of the situation. of the same. Ficosa experts are also going to deal with the development of a camera vision algorithm, as well as the creation of Artificial Intelligence models with which to anonymize the personal data of the images obtained through the cameras installed in the vehicle.

The Selfy project also intends to become the main provider of safety and resilience self-management tools for autonomous and connected vehicles at a European level. For this, its members will work with four pillars as a base: knowledge of the situation; data sharing through your process for problem event detection; resilience to increase adaptation and response to cyberattacks; and development of data privacy, confidentiality, integrity and immutability tools.

All the tools, systems and utilities that are developed through the Selfy project will be evaluated before their integration into the vehicles through a simulation and in a laboratory environment. After passing these tests, three scenarios will be developed in real and controlled environments. They will demonstrate their performance, as well as how useful and safe they can be.

Jose María Forcadell, Technology Director of Ficosahas highlighted about the company’s participation in the Selfy project that the company is satisfied «to be part of such a strategic project for the advancement of autonomous and connected vehicles as SELFY. I am convinced that, thanks to the collaborative work with the other partners of the consortium, SELFY will represent a turning point for the sector at a European level that will allow us to continue advancing towards a safer, more resilient and innovative mobility of the future.”
