In September 2021, the National Assembly passed a new law to combat piracy in France. We find at the heart of this law the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (ARCOM), a brand new entity resulting from the merger between Hadopi and the CSA.

Since its entry into force in January 2022, ARCOM has increased blocking measures against pirate sites and IPTV platforms. And precisely, the digital policeman has just taken stock of these results this Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Thus, we learn that 250 pirate sites that broadcast sports competitions illegally have closed their doors in France since the beginning of the year.

Arcom closed 250 pirate sites in just 4 months of existence

This represents almost two-thirds of illicit online sports viewership as specified by ARCOM. “Results that are more than encouraging, spectacular”, welcomes in the columns of the Parisian Denis Rapone, in charge of the protection of creation and the fight against sports piracy for ARCOM.

As a reminder, ARCOM was able to block all these pirate sites thanks to the provisions provided for by the new anti-piracy law. Thanks to it, rights holders are able to seize the judge to demand the immediate closure of offending sites. In addition, rightsholders can also contact ARCOM, which in turn can order ISPs to block access to pirate sites targeted by court orders.

Already, five court rulings were obtained in favor of major channels. This is the case of BeIN Sports, which won the blocking of around twenty pirate sites at the end of January 2022. More recently, it was the Professional Football League which recorded a great victory against pirate sites. And indeed and thanks to a verdict rendered by the Paris court, the LFP obtained the blocking by the French ISPs of several pirate sites which illegally broadcast L1 and L2 matches. Always within the framework of its attributions, the ARCOM will soon receive the reinforcement of the magistrate Laurence Pécaut-Rivolier. It will be in charge of the fight against terrorist and child pornography content online.
