Google has just launched a pilot project aimed at allowing “ a small number of participating developers to offer a payment system in addition to that of Google Play. Spotify, which recently experienced a massive churn wave, will be the first and will use both Google Play’s billing system and its own.

For the very first time on such a popular application, Internet users who have downloaded the music streaming application to the 400 million users from the Google Play Store will therefore have the choice between Spotify’s payment system and Google Play billing, and both payment options will be available directly in the app.

Google is finally opening up to direct payments on other apps

So far, Google Play has not allowed developers to let their apps accept direct payment. Currently, you need to sign up and pay for your subscription for Spotify outside of the Android app. Now, under this new deal, Spotify will still pay Google a portion of the subscription fee, but we imagine that percentage will be lower than the current Play Store commission of around 30%.

Neither company would confirm an exact figure, but it is known that Spotify should donate at least 11% of the subscription price to Google in South Koreawhere this new program is being tested, because of a recent law passed in the country on commissions relating to ” subscription purchases made through alternative billing “.

Spotify explains that users who download the application from the Play Store will therefore have the possibility in South Korea of choose between Play Store billing and Spotify billingand the options will be ” side by side in the app “. For the moment, it is not known when Spotify plans to deploy these two billing methods in more countries, but we hope that such a measure will soon arrive in France.
