The Steam Deck is one of the most anticipated consoles of the year. Valve started the first round of shipments today for a few customers who pre-ordered the console, and it looks like the company is already preparing to launch a new generation. In an interview with Edge magazine, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell revealed that the Steam Deck 2 idea is in the works.

The first step is to allow yourself to play the great games that exist today. The second iterations will be more focused on: what capabilities does mobile give us, beyond what you would get in a traditional desktop or laptop gaming environment?“, can we read in the interview.

A Steam Deck 2 compatible with virtual reality?

While the first generation of Steam Deck essentially lets you play Steam games on the go, the second generation could well go beyond what a classic PC can offerthat is to say, to offer a platform allowing you play virtual reality games in a portable way.

One of the things that [Steam Deck] represents, it’s high-performance, battery-operable power, which you could potentially use in VR applications as well. You can take the PC and build something that’s much more portable. We’re not quite there yet, but it’s a stepping stone says Gabe Newell.

Gabe Newell also notes that Valve found, to its surprise, that the most expensive version of the Steam Deck was the most popular. The configuration with 512 GB of SSD storage, however, costs 679 euros, against 419 euros for the version with 64 GB of eMMC storage. For players who want to connect the console to a screen, you will also have to get a dock separately, unlike the Nintendo Switch. However, this will unfortunately not be available at launch.
