Surface Laptop SE has been the first equipment announced for the new Windows 11 SE. A laptop under Microsoft’s own hardware brand, which does not come alone, since all its large OEM partners have also submitted their proposals.
We talked about it in the presentation of the operating system. Microsoft needed something specific to slow Google’s push with Chromebooks into the education system and here it is. The hardware line will sound quite familiar to you from the program started a decade ago with netbooks, because they are small laptops, simple and robust designs, basic performance and a very, very cheap price.
The big difference with the netbooks that started with Windows 7 are the great limitations that the special version of the operating system they use entails and that, as we have repeated, is absolutely dedicated to the education sector, although it must be said that any of them are you will be able to erase Windows 11 SE and install a license with the full version of Windows 11. It will be an irreversible action, because it will not be possible to return to SE. In addition, it will be difficult to find these equipment in the usual retailers because – in principle – they will only be sold in specific channels for education.
Surface Laptop SE
It is a laptop with 11.6 inch LCD screen and native HD resolution to offer 1366 x 768 pixels. Microsoft does away with the fantastic magnesium chassis that it uses in the rest of the Surface to save costs and opts for a reinforced polycarbonate.
Its hardware base is the responsibility of the processors Intel Celeron N4020 or N4120, both with integrated Intel HD 600 graphics. You can install 4 or 8 Gbytes of DDR4 RAM and for internal storage it will offer 64 or 128 Gbytes.
It will have USB type A, USB type C ports, 3.5 mm jack audio connector, 1MP webcam and 2W stereo speakers. Regarding the wireless connection for the Internet and peripherals, we find Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 . Its weight is limited to 1.1 kg and its price of $ 249 make it the cheapest of all of Microsoft’s own hardware line. A laptop as cheap as it is basic for the premiere of Windows 11 SE.
Other laptops with Windows 11 SE
The Surface Laptop SE doesn’t come alone. The big PC manufacturers have announced their own models with the new operating system, although some are missing, such as HP, a great specialist for the teaching sector. There is a bit of everything, because we see Intel and AMD hardware, some touch screens, convertible and 2-in-1 formats that are added to the classic laptops and others that bet on resistance and robustness.
In addition to using the special version of Windows, three common aspects in all of them are the small screens, the basic performance and fairly inexpensive price ranging from $ 249 to $ 379. It is likely that if this platform meets sales targets and becomes a real alternative to Chromebooks, other types of models will be marketed, perhaps with larger screen sizes and other types of hardware that provide greater performance. In any case, the objectives of Windows 11 SE and the offer that we are going to review is more than enough to start with. We go with a summary of specifications of all the announced models.

All these laptops and convertibles pre-install Windows 11 SE and will be available for the Christmas campaign. Designed specifically to run on low-cost hardware and improve ease-of-use by school IT administrators, they come as Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Chrome OS.
As we said above, neither these computers nor Windows 11 SE will be available to the general public and will be distributed in specialized channels, for which Microsoft announces launch offers starting at $ 219. In all cases, you can remove the default system and install a license with the full version of Windows 11, although it is not really your goal and there are computers more prepared for the consumer market with better hardware for a little more investment.
