Surface Trio: Microsoft is considering a smartphone with 3 screens

Microsoft has deposited the concept of a smartphone with three screens. It takes the form of a Surface Duo, but adding an additional display. If nothing says that the Redmond firm is currently working on such a format, the patent filing proves that it is thinking about it.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo is not really a great success and it is not the second iteration, released a few months ago, which saves the table. The Redmond firm could persevere in this direction with a new format: three screens instead of two.

Patently Apple has indeed spotted an interesting patent filed by Microsoft last June and published on December 23. This is a fairly long and technical patent which describes a new terminal. Only one diagram is included and he presents the concept to us.

Microsoft is considering a Surface Trio

This terminal would work the same as the Surface Duo with screens that would fold in on themselves. But this time the smartphone would not have two, but three screens. All would be connected by hinges and the terminal could unfold entirely to form a huge display.

As the diagram shows, it would also be possible to “close” the smartphone while having the possibility of using a last screen that emerges. It is for the moment difficult to imagine the use that we could have of it in the everyday life but used well, these three screens could be interesting.

Foldable and / or dual-display smartphones are starting to hit the market and the builders are already thinking about what to do next. Samsung is also in the starting blocks and presented a similar concept a few months ago. Here, it was not a patent, but a demonstration video which showed us the use that we could make of this kind of product.

Anyway, Microsoft is thinking about the continuation of its range. The first two Surface Duos did not really convince, both because of their format and their software part riddled with bugs. This Surface Trio could then represent the last chance to really convince for the American company.
