Synology RT6600ax, a router with network protection technology

Synology has presented its new router rt6600ax, with WiFi 6 certification. Equipped with various systems and mechanisms for network protection, it is designed to offer fast and secure connectivity. Integrate the Synology Router Manager (SRM) 1.3 operating system.

Thanks to the improvements in data encryption, beamforming, programming and signal isolation that it includes, the WiFi connection that it offers has more reliability. It offers a 2.5 GbE port that can be configured to implement either WAN or LAN networks. They can also set up and connect high-performance devices, such as a NAS, and high-speed wireless backhauls to it.

This Synology router has a built-in 1.8 GHz quad-core processor, which offers high speed even with multiple devices connected and with all its functions activated. The RT6600ax, thanks to its tri-band technology, working in combination with Smart Connect, can optimize the distribution of connected devices and eliminate data transmission bottlenecks. Plus, supporting the new 5.9 GHz spectrum unlocks non-DFS channels at 80 and 160 Hz, allowing you to achieve 6.6 Gbps wireless performance, plus the ability to establish higher simultaneous connections. Your VPN server will also be more agile for it.

Running the latest version of Synology’s operating system, RT6600ax has features that expand network management capabilities, as well as meet the needs for increased security and flexibility that characterize today’s network environments. With SRM 1.3, this router allows you to create up to five independent networks, and each one of them available to assign up to three WiFi SSIDs.

In this way it is possible to have more security, which is also promoted by its one-way firewall rules, which can be configured independently for each network. This allows you to limit connectivity to and from devices with a lower security level, such as Internet of Things devices. Furthermore, since it is compliant with the 802.1q standard, it makes integration into existing networks in router, AP, and mesh configurations easier.

SRM 1.3 also includes several web filtering, traffic control and remote access applications to the latest Synology router models. For starters, it offers guaranteed secure access for all users. The different profiles that can be configured for them can be adjusted to limit the time a user spends online, or to block browsing when certain conditions are met.

Devices that are assigned to the same profile will share the same set of Internet access rules, without having to repeat the configuration by hand. It also has specific network profiles for devices that do not belong to any user but that need Internet access control and supervision. This happens with guest devices, or those that access the network for the first time.

The router has functions of parental controll, among which is the limitation of the time of Internet use, either with schedules or with a quota system. Also with filtering options for entire website categories, or specific domains, thanks to the allowed and blocked lists. It also makes it easy to narrow down inappropriate search results, with safe search options for YouTube, Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. And it offers network-wide threat blocking thanks to the DNS and IP threat intelligence database and its support for Google Safe Browsing.

Thanks to the RT6600ax, the available connection bandwidth can be distributed among the connected devices. This way you can prioritize a single client or application when there are specific needs. On the other hand, its historical and real-time data give the opportunity to carry out a granular audit, with automatically generated or on-demand traffic reports.

SRM’s remote connectivity options and tools allow network users to access exclusive intranet websites from outside the network, and do so directly from their browser (WebVPN). This is very important for remote or hybrid work, as is the ability to establish high-performance connections with a dedicated client over multiple protocols (SSL VPN), the ability to bridge multiple locations to share resources seamlessly cross-network (Site-to-Site VPN), and the option to enable remote operation of devices that support the RDP/VNC remote desktop standard.

To access the router’s operating system and its features, Synology offers a mobile app, DS-Router, which allows you to perform enhanced network management tasks from any connected point. Its version 2.0 incorporates functions that can be carried out from the smartphone that until now could only be carried out from the router’s own operating system, SRM. These include the creation of wireless networks, the configuration of web filtering, parental control and the configuration of traffic control schemes. The Synology RT6600ax is now available in several countries in the North American and Asia-Pacific regions, as well as in Europe.
