Telefonica Spain and Nokia have announced that have tested 25G PON technology in Spain for the first time. They have done it successfully, so much so that they have managed to reach Symmetrical speeds of 20 Gbps. In addition, with this test, Telefónica has validated that the GPON and XGS-PON broadband technologies can coexist on the same fiber with the 25G PON technology.
This offers a large capacity of symmetrical bandwidth in the fiber, which will allow offering new use cases, and covering high bandwidth requirements. In addition, it allows you to reach high speeds with very low latency. Thanks to it, therefore, the network will be prepared for future technologies and applications with a high demand for bandwidth and immediacy.
Nokia’s 25G PON solution employs the world’s first implementation of this technology. Includes Lightspan and ISAM access nodes, Quillion-based Multi-PON line cards, and fiber optic modems. Depending on the optics chosen, it supports symmetrical speeds of up to 25 GB per second upstream and downstream. Also asymmetric speeds of 25 Gbps upload and 10 download.
Nokia’s high-capacity access nodes, typically located in telecommunication exchanges, are deployed for large-scale fiber deployments. They connect thousands of users by optical fiber and can support various fiber technologies, such as GPON, XGS-PON, 25G PON and point-to-point Ethernet, so that it is possible to offer various services with the appropriate technology in each case.
Nokia’s ONT (Optical Network Terminal) devices, or fiber modems, more suitable for the technologies, are installed at the point where the user is located. They are the termination of the fiber optic connection, and their mission is to provide broadband services at the user’s facilities, or at cell locations.
Gonzalo Garzón, Fixed Access Director of Telefónica Spain, has pointed out in connection with the tests with 25G PON technology that “Telefónica was the first operator in Spain to provide gigabit connectivity, but we didn’t stop there. Consumer demand for bandwidth never stops and the most exciting applications like virtual reality games will always evolve to make the most of available bandwidth. New FTTH technologies provide us with even more opportunities in home connectivity. With its enormous increase in capacity, we will be able to offer new services over the same network.”
For his part, Bjorn Capens, Vice President of Europe for Fixed Networks at Nokiahas highlighted that “Powered by our Quillion chipset, this 25G PON proof-of-concept with Telefónica has shown that huge bandwidth capacity can be easily added to your existing networks, coexisting with your existing PON technologies. This means that clients on the same fiber connection can be served with GPON, XGS-PON or 25G PON, making it much easier to manage upgrade cycles..”
