Tesla: autonomous driving in Full Self Driving mode is close to perfection, with video support

A series of videos posted to the Whole Mars Catalog YouTube channel demonstrate Tesla’s already well-advanced self-driving capabilities. A convincing demonstration as it stands, but which does not take into account the technical choices of the brand, which will do without certain on-board technologies at present.

Many experts claim that autopilot for cars is not mature yet. We would still be far from level 5, synonymous with completely autonomous software that would not need any human intervention to go from point A to point B. Tesla is also accused of lying about the true capabilities of the software. ‘Autopilot and FSD. However, a series of videos published on YouTube by the Whole Mars Catalog channel prove that Tesla-style autopilot, Tesla’s Full Self Driving Mode in its beta version 10.69.2.3, works perfectly.

The latest video shows a driver starting his Tesla vehicle at Fisherman’s Wharf and driving to Fort Point. Characteristic of this route along a San Francisco tourist route: the motorist does not interact with the steering wheel or the pedals. It lets Tesla’s software take care of everything, and the result is quite convincing even if everything is not perfect.

Full Self Driving mode isn’t perfect, but it’s safe

On the eight kilometers of distance traveled, the software seems to have difficulties only on the first bend… out of an excess of caution. The area crossed is very busy. Many pedestrians cross the road in all directions, which causes the FSD to wait a little too long. Is it due to poorly calibrated Tesla Vision technology or software that struggles to make a decision? One thing is certain, it is that with the current calibration, pedestrians are safe from any accident : they are indeed a priority in the eyes of Tesla’s autonomous car.

The series of videos posted on the Whole Mars Catalog YouTube channel show us Tesla’s car driving in autonomous mode in a variety of situations. In particular, we note, through the vehicle screen, that the car has a very good perception of distances and the pace of surrounding vehicles. In general, and on most videos, the driver of the vehicle only very rarely needs to intervene in driving. Do these videos demonstrate that Teslas are ready for true self-driving? The manufacturer has announced the abandonment of ultrasonic sensors on its future models, which will lead to the temporary deactivation of many functions at work in the videos.
