At the end of 2017, Tesla unveiled the Semi, a futuristic semi-autonomous electric truck. Destined to revolutionize road transport, the truck promises 800 kilometers of autonomy. It would be able to carry more than 35 tons. Several large American groups, including the giant PepsiCo, have ordered dozens of units when production had not yet started.

According to the latest news, production of the Tesla Semi began at the end of 2021 but no release date has yet been communicated by Elon Musk’s group. Stingy with details, the automotive giant has not given much information on the features of its future truck either.

Tesla invents an automatic tire inflation system

At the same time, a patent filed by Tesla in 2018 has just been approved by the United States Bureau of patents and trademarks of business. The patent describes an automatic tire inflation system. As our colleagues from Electrek report, Tesla has come up with a technology that makes it possible to control and adjust tire pressure without the intervention of the driver or a mechanic.

This invention aims to correct faults in fitting systems pressure that already exists. Many military vehicles and heavy trucks are equipped with automated tools that change tire pressure based on the road surface. The solution Tesla describes has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance, the patent claims. Indeed, it prevents air leaks thanks to the integration of a seal guaranteeing tightness.

In the patent, Tesla does not specify whether this system is intended for a car or another type of electric vehicle. However, Electrek noticed that John Furtado, an engineer at Tesla, is mentioned in the patent. The engineer mainly worked on the firm’s electric truck.

Note that Tesla is not guaranteed to exploit the technology described in this patent. It is not uncommon for a company to patent an invention without ever incorporating it into a product. These patents are primarily intended to prevent a competitor from using similar technology.
