The Accord will be the first 100% Android Honda vehicle

Honda has introduced the new honda accord that will hit the roads in 2023, a model that will attract the attention of the most techies by the incorporation of Android Automotive as operating system. The Accord stopped being sold in Europe a few years ago, but this novelty could fall on the rest of the models, so let’s take a look at it.

What is Android Automotive?

Although Android Auto is software that requires a mobile phone connection to work (it practically clones your screen based on the data from the terminal), Android Automotive is something else entirelysince it is the vehicle’s own operating system, that is, it is an operating system that runs directly on the vehicle’s hardware.

This software is in charge of all the infotainment in the car, and is capable of even offering access to the Play Store through the Google Automotive Services (GAS) packagewhich is optional, but in the case of Honda they have decided to include it in the Accord.

And it is that including this package allows you to have the Android experience that many users would expect to find. GAS includes services such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Play Storeso that the vehicle could work with these services without having to depend on a mobile phone (although it will need an internet connection, of course).

A high-end extra

Of course, Google Automotive, or Google built-in as Honda calls it, It will be a complement that will arrive as an extra in the Accord. According to the manufacturer’s press release, the top model in the range, the Accord Touring, will bring it as standard, and we do not know exactly if the previous versions (LX, EX, Sport, EXL and Sport-L) will be able to include it as extra. Everything points to no.

This once again reveals the manufacturers’ perspective on what it means to bet on the most current technology. For many years, we have been seeing how they have not fully dared with solutions as interesting as Car Play and Android Auto (Honda itself took a long time to offer them). Now, with Android Automotive, it once again puts an important step in the adaptation of technology, since limiting it to the most expensive version of the Accord seems to limit the implementation of technology too much.

Will it come to Europe?

At the moment this Accord with Android Automotive will be available only for the United States, since since 2015 the model stopped being sold throughout Europe. In any case, it is most likely that the next Civic will be encouraged to take the same steps, so sooner or later we will see a similar proposal in our market. What do you think of this technological option? Would you pay the extra to have it?
