Between 1999 and 2003, fans of science fiction and adult animation could enjoy the adventures of Fry, a young man who was accidentally cryogenized on December 31, 1999. For him, the year 2000 bug did indeed take place. , and he now finds himself propelled 1000 years later to New York. At the dawn of the year 3000, the world has changed, populated by robots and aliens. He was then hired by one of his descendants at Planet Express. With his new friends, Leela and Bender, he travels the galaxy to deliver packages and carry out perilous missions.
Futurama, broadcast on FOX will be entitled to 7 seasons, which are available today on Disney+. A little jewel of nostalgia which is now about to be resuscitated by Hulu according to Deadline. The American media announces that after months of negotiation, a contract has been finalized between the platform and the creator. 20 new episodes are on the program, all written and directed by Matt Groening and David X.Cohen. The creators will not be the only ones to make their comeback, since the entire voice cast should also return to service. All ? Not really since the American voice of Bender, John DiMaggio is not announced.
No Bender?
According to sources familiar with the matter, Hulu’s proposal was not enough to convince him, despite the actor’s desire to return to the skin of the alcoholic robot. However, according to him, the offer would not have been “pretty competitive based on the success and name recognition of the original series”. Hulu therefore began recruiting to replace him. The first readings of the scenario should take place next Monday.
In France, too, spectators will have to do without the original voice since Bernard Tiphaine died in 2020. As a reminder, he was replaced in 2002 by Hervé Caradec. We do not yet know if Alexis Tomassian will be back in the skin of Fry, or even if it is Blanche Ravalec or Mélody Dubos who will play Leela in these new episodes. If it was the first who lent her voice to the cyclops from season 1 to season 3, she had been replaced by Mélody Dubos for the last 2 bursts of episodes. These casting changes are explained by the resumption of dubbing by the Chinkel company in 2002.
A new opportunity to conclude the adventures of Fry
In 2011, Comedy Central announced that season 7 would be the last. A hasty end according to the creator, who indicates to Deadline : “It’s a real honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama once again, before we’re abruptly canceled yet again.”
The plot should therefore not deviate too much from the initial story, and perhaps pick up where we left off. This new season will premiere in 2023 on Hulu. We can hope that in France, it is Disney + which broadcasts it. Especially since the genre of adult animation is rather popular in our green regions, especially since the arrival of Rick & Morty.
