The data busts the myth, what resolution do most play on PC?

The Steam video game platform is currently the most important and the one with the most users. Among all the games and software they offer, they also offer hardware stats and user features. According to Steam stats, the 1080p resolution is still preferred among PC gamers.

A good way to see the trends in the gaming market is to see the data offered by the Valve store. But these statistics have a problem, and it doesn’t matter, if you connected a few hours ago or two years ago, your data persists in the system. This means that there are certain metrics that may not be entirely reliable.

Steam says 1080p is the most popular resolution for gaming

Within the industry there seems to be an attempt to force users to adopt monitors 1440p or 4K resolution. Despite this interest, users seem to continue with other resolutions. The main reason would be the price of gaming monitors with resolutions such as 4K, which are quite expensive.

Currently the 1080p resolution most popular among Steam users, with a 66.72% share. It seems that most users opt for gaming monitors and laptops with this native resolution. The reasons are quite simple: they are cheaper monitors and it is the ideal resolution for competitive games. It should be noted that this resolution has lost -0.6% market share.

the r1440p (2560×1440) solution is the second most popular on the platform, with a 10.18% fee. As we can see, it is very, very far from the most common resolution on Steam. While the 4K resolution (3840×2160) has only one 2.42% share. To give us an idea, the 1366×768 resolution has a 6.44% share and monitors are no longer manufactured with this resolution.

But it is that the multi-monitor resolution (two or more displays connected) show that the resolution 3840×1080 is the most popular, with a 68.68% share. This tells us that users prefer to use two 1080p resolution screens to other types of panels. The second most popular multi-monitor resolution is 4480×1440 with a share of 18.86%.

Very far from gaming in 4K resolution

These data show the preferences of users today. Monitors with 1080p resolution designed for gaming are below 200 euros. It is a quite acceptable price for most users, in addition to being the resolution that can give us the most FPS.

It makes it clear that 1440p resolution monitors are still far from being an option for the average user for price. Let’s not even talk about 4K monitors, which are even further away in price. It is difficult to find a 4K resolution monitor below 400 euros, a price that is not very accessible for most users.

Although there is no FPS data and so on, they are data that should be taken into consideration by manufacturers. Advertising 4K monitors for more than €1,000, as Sony has done, is silly and uninteresting to most users. Users make it clear, they want affordable hardware and components.
