The demand for data science experts and Python developers is growing

Developer hiring platforms are seeing a sharp increase in demand for determined data science skills in job offers that pass through them. This is how they reflected in the latest IT Skills report, carried out by the selection platform and interviews DevSkiller, which points to a 295% increase in the number of data science-related tasks that recruiters were looking for in the candidates they interviewed in recruitment processes in 2021.

This, in turn, has strongly fueled the growth of python and the demand for professionals with command of this language, very popular in the development of machine learning and data science applications, has increased by 154%. Data analysis was present in 32.69% of the data science coding tests, and according to the DevSkiller CEO Jakub Kubry?ski, «The rise in popularity of data science hasn’t come as much of a surprise, given how valuable it has become to businesses around the world. The number of tasks in our test catalog related to data science and Python has grown in 2021 by 158.33% and 113.33%«.

The data reported by DevSkiller was based on 102,869 code tests submitted through the DevSkiller platform between December 1, 2020 and the same day in 2021. This annual report, now in its fourth edition, seeks to capture trends in recruiting in the technology sector globally by assessing the types of skills recruiters ask of candidates. On this occasion, the ones that have grown the most have been, as we have seen, data science and Python. Behind are cybersecurity and quality assurance, along with PHP, Scala and Blockchain.

That cybersecurity is on the list of skills whose demand is growing the most is no surprise, given the speed with which technology has advanced in recent years in the business world, with the digitalization of platforms, products and services, which means that companies have new threats to mitigate every so often. On the other hand, businesses are increasingly interested in blockchain due to the growing interest in cryptocurrencies and NFTs among consumers and businesses. That’s the reason that more and more people join data science online course and earn such skills.

Mind you, while data science has been the fastest growing area of expertise recruiters are looking for, Java and SQL remain the most in-demand technology skills. Each of these languages is in the 19% of DevSkiller tests sent to developers for selection processes in 2021. JavaScript, which tied for first position with Java in 2020, fell to third position with an 18% presence in tests. It was followed by Python (9%) and PHP (6%).

Between 2020 and 2021, 40% of code testing invites went to junior developers, 23.4% to mid-level developers, and 36.6% to senior developers and engineers. The most sought after profiles to hire were junior Python developers and junior data scientists (45.45%). Of course, that companies looking to hire software developers in 2021 do not expect that the problems in finding the candidates they need to fill their positions will disappear soon, since they will continue in 2022.
