The first Exynos SoC with RDNA 2 graphics will be presented on January 11, 2022

Everything points to the first Exynos with RDNA 2 graphics from AMD will be filed Jan 11, 2022. Expectations around this SoC are high, not only because of its inclusion in variants of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and other top-of-the-range Samsung devices, but also because it can be a turning point in the execution of locally installed video games on mobiles and tablets. .

It has been the same official Samsung Exynos account that has announced the event with its date, so there is no doubt that we will finally see the Exynos 2200 (or at least it is the model that is expected to see) officially presented. This SoC is the result of about two years of work by Samsung and AMD, when both companies announced that they would work together to integrate the graphics technology of the second into the ARM processors of the first.

Despite the fact that AMD’s dedicated RDNA 2 graphics have not finished catching on at a technological level due to their poor performance with ray tracing and a FidelityFX Super Resolution that on a qualitative level has turned out to be little compared to NVIDIA’s DLSS, no there is no doubt that the architecture developed by Radeon offers very high performance in rasterization.

Retaking the Exynos 2200 and its GPU with RDNA 2 architecture, it will have on that last front with dedicated hardware to speed up ray tracing and should offer very good performance, enough to move games with a graphical load similar to that seen in the generation of consoles starring PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which would not be bad at all, and we will see how it ends up compared to Apple’s impressive ARM SoCs. While waiting for the official presentation, its basic characteristics aim to be the following:

  • A high-performance Cortex-X2 core.
  • Three high-performance Cortex-A710 cores.
  • Four high-efficiency Cortex-A510 cores.
  • A Radeon RDNA 2 GPU with 6 compute units, and therefore will have 384 shaders, 24 texturing units, 8 raster units and 6 cores to accelerate ray tracing.

The fact that the ARM spectrum is dominated by Android should put Vulkan in the center as API for video games and applications that handle “heavy graphics”, or at least it should be while we see how far Fuchsia goes and what decisions Google makes around its latest operating system, which has already started to spread on Nest devices.

On January 11, 2022 we should have all the answers about the Exynos 2200, if it is really the processor to present and not another Exynos model with RDNA 2.
