The first iPhone 12 Pro Max equipped with a USB-C port is on sale on eBay. Slovak engineers have indeed managed to remove Apple’s Lightning port. Despite the changes, the smartphone is fully functional.
Despite pressure from Europe, Apple has always refused to swap the Lightning port on its iPhones for a USB-C port. In this context, engineers have taken matters into their own hands. Last year, a robotics student managed to add a USB-C port to an iPhone X. His creation sold for more than $100,000 on Ebay. Soon after, a YouTuber came up with a fully waterproof USB-C iPhone X.
In the same vein, DEEP, a company based in Slovakia, has developed the first iPhone 12 Pro Max equipped with a USB-C port. The company shared a video showing all the steps of the modification on his YouTube channel. You can find the video at the end of the article.

“This procedure comparable to a small operation requires adequate skills in microelectronics, knowledge of electronic circuits and their wiring, and a lot of patience”, says DEEP on its website. The Slovak engineers notably had to circumvent Apple’s MFI certification. This certification is reserved for cables and components certified by the mark. A USB-C port manufactured by a third party is obviously not affected by MFI.
To fit the USB-C port into the structure instead of the Lightning connector, they also had to move the speakers of the smartphone. In short, this operation is not within the reach of the first handyman.
Despite the many obstacles, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is fully functional, says Deep. The company assures that it is possible to charge the phone with an Apple charger, plug it into a computer or sync it with iTunes.
