The first SMS was sent 29 years ago now. On December 3, 1992, programmer Neil Papworth made history by sending the first SMS ” Short Message Service To Richard Jarvis, the CEO of British operator Vodafone, to wish him a Merry Christmas in advance. This first text was obviously sent via a computer. Note that the underlying technology was born as early as 1987.

This December 21, 2021, this historic SMS will be put up for auction in the form of an NFT (non-fungible token) by Aguttes, a major auction house based in France. Very popular since last year, NFTs are 100% digital assets that allow certification of the ownership of a work using blockchain technology.

Hand-signed by Nick Read, current Managing Director of Vodafone, this NFT is estimated between 100,000 and 200,000 euros. The person who takes charge of the work will receive a certificate guaranteed by the blockchain which ensures that no other NFT of the SMS will ever be created.

In addition to SMS, the communication protocol behind the text message is also included in the NFT. “The NFT smart contract represents the exclusive property of a detailed and unique digital replica of the original communication protocol”, explains Aguttes on his website. This animated replica will be available as an MP4 file.

The auction house specifies that “The smart contract also gives access to a certificate issued by Vodafone which confirms the authenticity and uniqueness of this NFT of the world’s first SMS”. The buyer will also receive, as a gift, a photo of the cell phone who posted this very first SMS.

NFTs continue to be wildly successful in the Art market with works representing key moments in the history of modern technology. Recently, an NFT representing the first page of Wikipedia has just been auctioned for more than 660,000 euros. A few months earlier, the source code for the World Wide Web was auctioned for $ 5.4 million.
