Apple will unveil a new generation of iPhone at the end of the year, and we already know that the Pro and Pro Max models could be slightly thicker than the previous models because of a new photo sensor.
This year, the new iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max should not be similar to the 14 and 14 Max models. The models of the “Pro” range of 2022 will indeed benefit from components quite different from other versionssince we know for example that they will use a new A16 Pro chip, while the iPhone 14 and 14 Max will have to settle for an A16 chip very similar to the A15 chip of the iPhone 13.
Apple also intends to reserve the notchless 120 Hz LTPO display again for its most expensive smartphones, which means that the displays of the iPhone 14 and 14 Max will still be limited to a maximum frequency of 60 Hz. However, one of the biggest differences between the classic range and the Pro range will be at the rear, at the level of the photo sensors. The Pro and Pro Max models will feature a 48-megapixel sensor for the first time at Apple.
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will use a large 48 MP sensor
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reconfirmed on his Twitter account that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will use well a new 48 MP sensor. This is good news for smartphones, which have contented with a 12 MP sensor for many generations. A higher number of megapixels allows you to capture more details in photos, but can quickly turn against the user if the sensor is not large enough, and therefore not able to capture enough light.
To avoid this, Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that Apple has opted for a fairly large new sensor, since it will be about 25-35% larger than the 12 MP sensor of the iPhone 13 and 14, and between 5-10% thicker. This additional thickness will unfortunately force Apple to make its Pro models thicker than the previous generation. According to the CAD files that we had been able to see, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be 7.85mm thick, compared to 7.7mm for iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. We imagine that the devices will become slightly heavier at the same time.
