Tom Cruise is going to shoot a movie in space. For this he will even have the right to his own film studio within the ISS.
While the question of financing the ISS, the international space station, is on many lips at NASA or Roscosmos, now government agencies seem to have found a new way to proceed. Last year Russia had already launched a more than special mission with an actress and her director who went to the ISS to film some sequences of what should be the first film ever made in space.
If Gravity had hitherto been the prize for the most “realistic” film about life in space, the exploits of George Clooney did not really happen above our heads, but in the studios. But all of that is about to change. Indeed, Tom Cruise, with director Doug Liman, will also be entitled to his few scenes in the ISS.
A very secret film
If for the moment little information has leaked concerning this film, the main actor having never yet expressed himself on this subject. We only know, by a joint press release between Axiom Space and the producers of the feature film, that the latter will have the right to its own module. Called SEE_1, it should come to moor at the Axiom section at the start of the 2024 school year.
With a diameter of six meters, this round module should therefore serve as a filming studio for Tom Cruise and Doug Liman who is to date the only person expected to go to the ISS alongside the actor. In addition to this perfectly spherical shape, the module should have several specificities.
An “inflatable” module
Indeed, it should not arrive in its final form on the edge of the ISS, the engineers behind this project propose to build an “inflatable” module which would gain its final size once docked to the ship. If this project is surprising, it is not a great first.
Indeed, the company Bigelow Aerospace, now liquidated, had succeeded in 2016 in mooring a module of this kind to the space station. The latter is still used by NASA, which stores many experiments, including scientific ones, there. During his stay in the station, Thomas Pesquet was able to work there on several occasions.
