The Mac mini makes its long-awaited leap to M2… and to M2 Pro

Among the most probable announcements that we anticipated yesterday for today, was that of the long-awaited leap of the Mac mini, the small in size but great in features of Apple’s desktops, and instinct did not fail us. The announcement of the new Apple M2 Pro and Apple M2 Max has been a little more surprising, and what we found most likely, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, has been confirmed. It has therefore been a more than interesting start to the year for Apple.

Now, waiting for the leap from Mac Pro to Apple silicon to complete the transition that began in 2020, the rest of both desktop and laptop systems have not only made this leap, but also, except for Mac Studio, since They have gone through two generations of the company’s chips, so we can say without a doubt that this transition is behind us, and that Apple’s platform is already more than consolidated and looking to the future.

The Mac mini makes its long-awaited leap to M2... and M2 Pro

If with the MacBook Pro we have seen Apple’s top of the range in terms of laptops, here we are at the opposite end, with the Cupertino entry proposal for desktop computers. This does not mean, however, that we are talking about underperforming teams or anything like that. Both the Apple M2, which we already told you about when it was launched, and this new M2 Pro, offer more than considerable performance, making them suitable for countless tasks. Something that, together with the particularities of the Mac mini, make it an incredibly versatile system.

The Mac mini with M2 comes with a single SoC option, integrating an octa-core CPU with a 10-core GPU, while the M2 Pro model has two variants, one with 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores. , and another somewhat more powerful, with 12 GPU cores and 19 GPU cores. In all cases we will find 16 Neural Engine cores.

There are also differences when it comes to memory and storage. While the Mac mini with M2 moves between eight and 24 gigabytes of unified memory, its “big brother” starts from 16 gigabytes and can reach 32. And if we talk about storage, the most basic version starts from the 256 gigabytes and can reach two terabytes, while the model with M2 Pro starts at 512 gigabytes and can jump to no less than eight terabytes.

A small but important difference is also found in terms of connectivity, with two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports in the model with M2, which become four in the Mac mini with M2 Pro. Otherwise, in all of them we find another two USB-A, an HDMI 2.0 connector, a Gigabit Ethernet network port and an audio minijack, to which we add, in the wireless connectivity section, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

These new Mac mini can already be reserved on the Apple website, and its availability will arrive on January 24. As you have already seen in the specifications, the entry price for the humblest of the range is 719 euros, so we are talking about the cheapest option to enter the Apple PC ecosystem. Now, if you want to go big, the top of the range, that is, the Mac mini with M2 Pro with 12 cores, 32 gigabytes of RAM and eight terabytes of storage, prepare for it no less than 5,134 euros.
