The majority of Spaniards pay between 10 and 25% more electricity for teleworking

The electricity price it is increasing again and there is little hope that we will return to “normal” levels, at least in the short and medium term, according to data published by the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE). The high rate coexists in the midst of a heat wave with the phenomenon of teleworking, a work modality that many Spaniards choose, especially in vacation times.

Connecting your computer, screen and other work devices to your home network has a direct effect on your electricity bill. 51% of employees in our country confirm that your bill has increased due to teleworking, with a rise of between 10 and 25% to 72%. This is demonstrated by a survey developed by Pleo, the Danish company that eliminates cumbersome tickets and paperwork in expense management.

The Spanish regulations on teleworking clearly indicate that the expenses derived from remote work must be borne by the company, and not entail an extra cost for the employee. However, the reality is that in 52% of cases the workers they do not yet receive any financial compensation to cover this cost. Nor is there a clear position on the part of the employees: 76% do not feel comfortable reporting the electricity bill to their company. The same goes for internet and phone expenses, which account for less than 2% of total work expenses reported by employees in 2022.

Teleworking entails a series of costs that until now most companies had not considered as part of their expense items, such as the employee Internet contract or their electricity bill”explains Álvaro Dexeus, responsible for Southern Europe at Pleo. “In this sense, it is essential that companies review your internal policies and establish procedures for employees to easily report any work-related expenses.”
