The new generation of SSD will be even cheaper, what is the secret?

Phison is one of the most famous brands in terms of flash controllers, the chips that are inside the SSD units and that are responsible for managing the data requests made by the rest of the computer’s components. Well, they just introduced three new chips, which are PS5020-E20, PS5025-E25 Y PS5026-E26. All of them designed for NVMe type units and, therefore, that make use of PCI Express ports.

The flash controller works much like a RAM controller, but it is somewhat more complex and for now and for years to come it will be found as a separate piece within NVMe SSDs. However, the fact that the PCI Express port doubles its speed with each new generation means that these chips have to double their capacity when it comes to processing the addresses requested by the processor. In addition to supporting increasingly higher storage capacities.

Phison Introduces New Flash Controllers PS5026-E26

Phison is already a well-known brand of flash controllers for NVMe SSD storage drives. Well, they have just introduced three new chips of this type, called PS5020-E20, PS5025-E25 Y PS5026-E26. All of them with different characteristics for different storage units of this type, but which are also designed for new chip storage with greater capacity. Which should lower the price of storage.

  • The PS5020-E20 is intended for drives with PCIe Gen 4 interface and has the ability to support drives up to 32TB capacity. So it has been designed for storage units designed for servers and not for home computers.
  • On the other hand the PS5025-E25 it is a flash controller that required an external RAM memory chip. His capacity? can reach the 7.2GB/s transfer speed and is intended for PCI Express generation 4 drives.
  • And to finish we would have the controller for the future PCIe 5 SSDthe PS5026-E26, which can support up to 13 GB/s of bandwidth. This was already presented a few weeks ago and, therefore, does not catch us by surprise.

At the moment, solid-state drives compatible with PCI Express of the fifth generation are something in the future, because at the moment only AMD’s Ryzen 7000 with socket AM5 will support this type of drives. So we will have to wait several years for them to become standardized in the market. What to add more of the P5026-E26 and company? Well, the fact that we are going to see it in the NVMe SSD units of several different brands of brands such as those of TEAMGROUP.

13 GB/s is the maximum speed of future SSDs

At the moment there are no applications that make the capacities of units of this type, but the bandwidth of an NVMe SSD is important due to the fact that it marks the copy time between the storage unit and the RAM memory. What allows to do amazing things at high speed in terms of data exchange. For example, if we are editing video we will not need to have all the footage in RAM and we will be able to quickly download it from the SSD in a few seconds. As for games, its use will change the level design of these a lot.

Although compared to RAM, 13 GB/s may not seem like much, when it comes to storage, we must bear in mind that a normal hard drive does not exceed 0.15 GB/s of average bandwidth and that it is the bandwidth of the RAM of a computer from 20 years ago. So the speed of storage has taken a giant leap. Now we just have to hope that the applications are up to the task, since the units are already in production.
