The Old Guard 2 director comes from the galaxy far, far away

As reported by Deadline, Mahoney, former second unit director alongside JJ Abrams in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, happens to the colleague Gina Prince-Bythewood who directed the 2020 film.

The film, based on the acclaimed Image Comics comic by Greg Rucka And Leandro Fernández, turned out to be one of last year’s biggest Netflix hits.

As stated a couple of months ago by Theron herself, the script for the sequel to The Old Guard is already ready and shooting should start in 2022.

Plot of The Old Guard

For centuries, the mortal world has been protected by a group of mercenaries led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron).

Strangely, squad members cannot die, but during a mission this extraordinary ability of theirs will become public.

Now it’s up to Andy and the latest arrival Nile (Kiki Layne) to help the team avert the danger posed by those who, at any price, intend to replicate and economically exploit this gift.

What awaits us in the sequel to The Old Guard?

SPOILER

At the end of the film the credits stop showing us a scene: six months after the killing of Merrick, Booker he returns to his home in Paris and finds the former member of the Old Guard Quynh, who welcomes him with a phrase: “Booker… it’s nice to finally meet you”.

As we saw in the film, Quynh was the first immortal who Andy he found. Nile discovers Quynh’s horrendous fate when she tells the group about dreaming of a woman who continues to die in an iron coffin.

Before Booker, Joe and Nicky joined the team, there were only Andy and Quynh, who fought thousands of battles side by side.

During the witch trials the two women were captured and accused of witchcraft. Andy managed to escape but Quynh was locked in an iron coffin and thrown into the sea, destined to continually die and rise again. From that moment Andy tried in every way to find Quynh and blamed himself for what happened to his friend.

“I made a promise to Quynh and I broke it” – Andy

Somehow Quynh managed to escape from her grave and found Booker. But is she back to reunite with Andy or to take revenge? And how did she escape from her underwater prison?

Greg Rucka, creator of The Old Guard, wrote a second comic called Force Multiplied, which explains how Quynh’s return affects the whole team. So if the first volume is faithful to the film we can expect the sequel to be adapted to the second novel.

Another peculiarity that will have an impact on The Old Guard sequel is also the fact that Andy is now immortal. In the second film they could explain if his mortality is due to the arrival of Nile or something else. They will also certainly have the opportunity to tell us the story behind the immortality of the protagonists, a topic not covered in the first film.
