DxOMark has updated its ranking of the best photophones. The Pixel 7 Pro, Google’s latest high-end smartphone, is in the lead, tied with Honor’s Magic4 Ultimate. It thus relegates the iPhone 14 Pro Max to third place, but only surpasses it by a small point. In selfies, on the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is still in the lead, ahead of Huawei’s P50 Pro. The Pixel 7 Pro is tied for third with the Mate 40 Pro.
Even if it is not unanimous among technophiles, the ranking DxOMark is still a reference. Many smartphones are tested there in several aspects: photography, selfies, display, battery and sound. We had the opportunity to visit the laboratory, located in the Paris region. And it is clear that the work done seems frankly serious to us. And the number of tests, both indoors and outdoors, is quite high.

In this ranking, iPhones and Huawei smartphones have reigned supreme for a very long time, especially in the photography part (with the main sensors). And recent rankings show that the two brands remain at the forefront of the exercise, with the P50 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, in particular. However, we have also been able to see the emergence of new brands that are very good at photography. We are thinking of Xiaomi with the Mi 11 Ultra, Vivo with the X70 Pro+ or Honor with the Magic4 Ultimate.
The Pixel 7 pro overtakes the iPhone 14 Pro Max on DxOMark
But this week, another brand created a surprise. It’s Google. The Pixel 7 Pro, of which you can find the complete test on our site, is positioned in first place in the ranking, tied with the Magic4 Ultimate. The latest smartphone from the Mountain View company scored 147 points. It thus overtakes the iPhone 14 Pro Max which was positioned in second position and which finds itself pushed back to third position. However, the difference is not very significant: only 1 point.
The difference is greater when you go into the detail of the two notes. The overall photo quality is better with the Pixel according to DxOMark, as well as the precision of the shots taken with the zoom. In contrast, the iPhone is better at videoin night shot and in the execution of bokeh. Furthermore, the preview photos is closer to reality with the iPhone than with the Pixel, confirming that Google’s proposal relies heavily on algorithms and image processing.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max remains the best on selfies
Each of the two smartphones therefore has its strengths and weaknesses. Also note that this ranking does not take into account the quality of the selfies. And in this area, the iPhone remains first in the ranking with 145 points. It is followed, with 144 points, by Huawei’s P50 Pro (ranked fourth in the photo), then by the Pixel 7 Pro which must share third place with the Mate 40 Pro. They both have 142 points.
