The PS5 hack is getting closer, but only on models with Blu-ray

With the current offer and how the way of consuming video games has changed, console piracy has decreased enormously, but that does not mean that there are still security enthusiasts who intensively seek methods to demonstrate the unprovable. For this reason, today there is a question that rings in many heads: Is it possible to hack the PS5?

The PS5 exploit with Blu-ray

The information was shared this weekend at security conferences handwear, and its discoverer, security engineer Andy Nguyen, commented that it would affect PS5, PS4 and quite possibly PS3. The security hole would be in the Blu-ray drive, since the bug would take advantage of a system vulnerability that would allow custom code to be injected with which to take complete control of the console. Thanks to some Java functions related to the Blu-ray interactive featureswould allow you to inject unsigned code into the console to open that long-awaited door that is so sought after in this type of closed system.

This would obviously result in the installation of unsigned code, which in the video game console environment quickly translates into homemade software and inevitably the loading of backups or illegal copies. That is, the goal of every hacker.

After previously reporting a total of 4 vulnerabilities related to PS4 and PS5, this Google engineer has updated his Hackerone post to report his latest discovery. The tests have been carried out on PS4 consoles with firmware 9.50 or lower and PS5 with firmware 5.00 or lower, believing that the technique should work equally well on PS3. In his history, Nguyen accumulates several security reports related to Ps4 and PS5, errors that in some cases report rewards of up to $10,000 depending on the severity. It is clear that this engineer has earned a bonus based on reporting bugs on the Hackerone platform.

The secret is on the Blu-ray

PS5 Design

The interesting thing about the matter is that this exploit would be directly related to the Blu-ray drive, so in the case of PS5, it could only be used in models that have a disc reader. In the event that it is confirmed and that the birth of home applications for PS5 begins, the resale of consoles could reach a new level of demand, since the versions with a Blu-ray drive would be revalued to unsuspected levels.

It remains to be seen if this bug would be remedied with a simple system update, but considering that Sony has given Nguyen permission to share his discovery at the conference, something tells us that the company has patched the hole as soon as they found out. .

The demo performed on the handwear will be available on video in the coming weeks, so until then we won’t be able to see the operation live. However, as we’ve already discussed, it’s quite possible that this won’t go much further due to a future update from Sony, though consoles that aren’t updated beyond system version 5.00 could still be vulnerable if everything works as it should. and as we imagine.
