The PS5 Pro will have a dual processor, will it finally move 4K at 120 Hz?

The appearance of a patent assigned to SONY describing a console with a dual processor configuration has given rise to the idea of an improved version of the PS5. And is that the concept of a PS5 Pro with Dual APU is not new, but given the latest advances from AMD, this is no longer impossible.

A few days ago we told you our opinion about the existence of a potential PlayStation 5 with greater capacities, known colloquially as PS5 Pro. Our argument is very simple: SONY is not going to develop a more powerful APU as it did with PS4 Pro and we draw the conclusion to see how the processors of the Japanese multinational have reduced their size, and also due to the appearance of deep learning algorithms and their related hardware that allow a quantitative leap without developing a very powerful integrated GPU. However, a recent SONY patent shows us a totally different path from the previous enhanced interaction, the use of a Dual APU for PS5 Pro.

Dual APU for PS5 Pro?

The images you see above correspond to a patent from SONY itself entitled SCALABLE GAME CONSOLE CPU / GPU DESIGN FOR HOME CONSOLE AND CLOUD GAMING. In this it talks about the development of a hardware with a Dual APU and the different configurations that would be possible, to unite both APUs in one.

If we read the introduction of the patent, it is clear that the second GPU is subordinate to the first:

In a multi-GPU simulation environment, image buffer handling can be implemented with multiple GPUs, each rendering its respective video frames or its respective portions of each frame.

One of the problems when rendering a scene in 3D is that a screen list can only be processed by the same GPU, which means that the games have to be designed to be used for that type of hardware and from the moment they Since few people have a configuration of this type, little by little the dual GPUs in PC have been falling into oblivion.

It is a limitation that will make the games of the current PS5 under this new hardware not able to take advantage of the capabilities of the supposed Dual APU of PS5 Pro, however, we cannot forget a certain patent that AMD published a few months ago and that we related to RDNA 3.

To understand SONY’s patent, we must understand a patent from its technology partner, AMD. This patent is related to RDNA 3, an architecture that we may not see in consoles, but it presents the idea of using GPUs subordinate to the first one in such a way that the programs are not aware of it and can use all the power of the multiple graphic processors.

However, this idea of the AMD patent is at least complex, since it requires the use of a third chip, which is responsible for accessing the VRAM for both GPUs, in addition to having the L3 cache, known as Infinity Cache. . To give you an approximate idea, the concept would be as in the diagram below these lines.

As a result, both APUs will share the same memory space. Making it easier for developers, keep costs low by reducing the number of memory chips. So the capabilities of this eventual PS5 Pro can be used from day one, both for future games and for those already on the market.

Why a Dual APU?

Most likely, SONY and AMD are developing a new 5nm version of the PS5 APU for an eventual smaller and cheaper PS5 Slim. We do not know if SONY and AMD will make improvements in this iteration of PS5, since it is not usual to do so in this type of models in terms of processing and memory, although we do expect improvements in terms of storage capacity.

We expected that the PS5 Pro will not be based on a brute force concept, but rather on scaling and performance augmentation by AI where SONY will develop a chip for a single model. However using an APU for the PS5 Slim that can then be used dual for PS5 Pro makes sense from a manufacturing point of view. Although we cannot rule out that this design does not come out in the form of a console, but as a server for Cloud Gaming.
