The RX 7000 and its secret chip, what is AMD hiding from us?

It’s no secret that AMD will bring the tradition of its processors to its graphics chips. So these will no longer be made up of a single chip to start using several, known as chiplets. Well, the latest leaks about the next generation of graphics cards, based on RDNA 3, have revealed something that we did not know. A secret chip in RX 7000. What could it be?

The fact that some models of the RX 7000 are going to make the leap to a chiplet configuration at this point is no secret and something we have known for a long time. Not only because of the continuous rumors that are appearing, but also because of a series of patents that AMD has added to its portfolio during the last year.

Well, at the moment the information we have is that all graphics cards under RDNA 3 architecture with a multi-chip configuration will use two different types of chips. On the one hand, the so-called GCD that would be the heart where the graphics cores would be and would be analogous to the CCD of the Ryzen. On the other hand, the MCDs, in charge of accessing the VRAM and housing the Infinity Cache. The news about the next generation of AMD graphics cards? Well, it seems that there is a secret chip in the RX 7000.

The secret chip of the RX 7000, what is it and what is it for?

The latest rumors about the next generation of AMD graphics cards, which will compete against NVIDIA’s RTX 40 and in theory also against Intel’s ARC Battlemage. They could not be more confusing and it has been known that there is a secret chip in the RX 7000, at least one of the configurations.

Well, the secret chip of the RX 7000 would apparently be in charge of the interconnection of the rest of the chiplets. So it would function as a hub responsible for communication between the different elements. This means that the RX 7000 would be what we know as a NoC or network on a chip. A type of configuration in which the central element functions as the router of a local network.

And what could house the secret chip of the RX 7000? Well, logically, to the GPU command processor, as well as access via the DMA unit and through the PCI Express port to the lists of commands that the CPU writes in the system RAM and that tell the GPU what to do. . It is also said that the new command processor could have improvements and optimizations for Ray Tracing.

Its presence would rule out the operation of the symmetrical, although subordinate, GPUs of a certain AMD patent. In it, each of the chiplets is a complete graphics chip and the second works subordinate to the first. In the new configuration we would be facing a large graphics chip, but divided into several smaller chips to facilitate its manufacture and not be limited in terms of possible configurations.
