The sale of laptops begins to slow down, but that of desktop equipment rises

The worldwide PC saleswhich had been triggered by the pandemic for two years, are beginning to put the brakes on, as shown by the decline of its sales in the first quarter of 2022: 5.1% according to IDC and 7% according to Gartner. Of course, this drop in equipment sales has not occurred equally. Thus, while the drop in laptop sales, particularly in Chromebooks, has been quite pronounced, the opposite has happened in desktop computers: sales have remained the same and have even risen, especially in the segment of business computers, something that has motivated the return to the office after the hardest period of the pandemic.

This decline, however, has been stronger than expected, although industry analysts are not worried, as they see potential for a recovery in the coming quarters. They see it more as a pause for the market to catch its breath after two years of more than remarkable growth. According to IDC, a total of 80.5 million computers were sold in the first three months of this year, and it leads to the fact that the past has been the seventh consecutive quarter with equipment sales above 80 million units. Gartner records slightly lower sales: 77.5 million.

Gartner points out that without counting Chromebooks, PC sales have not decreased, and have even grown by 3.3% year-on-year. By manufacturers, the one that has sold the most computers has been Lenovo, followed by HP, Dell, Apple, Asus and Acer, in this order. Apple’s sales have been influenced by the launch of the new M1 processor-based computers, while the war in Ukraine has also had some impact, since many manufacturers have stopped selling to Russia, and demand in Ukraine has practically disappeared.

At the same time, it must be taken into account that these sales have occurred despite the problems that the supply chain is going through, which still gives more value to the amount of sales achieved. It should also be borne in mind that they have been achieved at a time when the prices of CPUs and GPUs, precisely because of this shortage, have remained very high for several weeks.

It is also a factor that may have contributed to the reduction in sales in the consumer market, but with a drop in prices in GPUs especially already in sight, it is likely that the sales of the consumer segment in PCs will also recover in the years. next months.

Of course, with everything, instead of expecting double-digit sales growth, it is most likely that we will see a slight slowdown in the coming quarters and are below 10%a somewhat more modest growth than that achieved so far.
