The sequel to Dune ready to shoot in 2022, if it has a green light

The arrival of Dunes, the new film adaptation of the novel by Frank Herbert, is now imminent but the numerous delays and postponements caused by the pandemic have allowed its director, Denis Villeneuve, to think about his too sequel, which could start shooting in 2022.

We know that Villeneuve’s intentions have always been to make a second film that can conclude the adaptation of the first novel, but also to shoot the film of Messiah of Dune, the second novel in the Dune cycle.

Is the sequel to Dune ready to shoot in 2022?

In a recent interview, Villeneuve explained that while he knows that this is a large-scale project, he is ready to get to work:

“To proceed quickly with a film of that size you have to make sets, costumes, so we’re talking about months” explained the director. “But if the film is successful and the sequel has a green light, I can say I’ll be ready to shoot in 2022, for sure. 2022, for sure. I’d love to because I’m ready to start and I confess I’d like to bring it to the screen as soon as possible ”.

As we know, not all of the elements and characters that we would expect to see in the first film will be present in Dune (such as Feyd-Rautha), and many of these should instead be carried over to the second film. A choice made by the director to balance the duration of the two projects and give the right space to the key moments of the story.

“I didn’t want to sacrifice elements. Where do we end now, I thought it was the perfect way to feel… we feel that Paul (the character played by Timothée Chalamet) has a full arc, as a character for the first part. His relationship with his mother, we feel that there is something that is not a closure but something relevant in that moment, and to keep enough things for the latter. “
