According to a recent study by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Tesla Model 3 is the electric car that consumes the least energy per kilometer. It is followed by the Lucid Air and the Model Y. However, these results could be different in Europe. Explanations.
Have you ever wondered which electric car is the most energy efficient? With soaring electricity prices ahead of us this winter, chances are the answer is yes if you own one of these vehicles. You are not alone: the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), an American organization responsible for helping the transition to renewable energies, also wanted to know the answer to this question.
But before getting to the heart of the matter, it is worth knowing what MPGe is. It is a unit of measurement that we owe to another American agency, the EPA, which is the acronym for “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent”, literally “miles per gallon of equivalent essence “. In other words, this unit measures the number of miles (as a reminder, 1 mile is equal to 1.6 kilometers) that a vehicle can travel for the equivalent of one gallon (i.e. 4.5 liters) of gasoline according to its engine system.

What are the most energy efficient electric vehicles?
However, for electric cars, it is estimated that a 33.7 kWh battery produces as much energy as this famous gallon of gasoline. Starting from this principle, it is therefore sufficient to calculate the autonomy offered by such a battery on the various vehicles listed, which is precisely what the EERE did with 17 different cars. Among the latter, it is therefore the Tesla Model 3 which wins the first place. Here is the full ranking:

Tesla’s most popular car can travel 212 km with 33.7 kWh, closely followed by the Lucid Air with 209 km and the Model Y with 206 km. The gap is relatively tight on the podium, but much less when you go down the rankings, where the Model X is also located. Note, however, that these data are not necessarily exact in Europe, since we notice the total absence of vehicles originating from the old continent in the classification.
