He promised it, he did it. When the Model Y was released, Elon Musk was already talking about it becoming the number 1 selling car in the world by 2023, and here we are. After managing to climb onto the podium of the most popular cars last year, just behind the Toyota Corolla and Toyota RAV4, Tesla’s compact SUV has finally established itself as the leader in the automotive market.

Indeed, JATO data for 53 markets worldwide, plus information for other key markets and estimates for others, indicate that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in the world during the first quarter of this year.

The most popular car is no longer a thermal vehicle

Data collected for the first quarter shows that the Tesla Model Y leads with 267,200 units sold. This represents an increase of approximately 69% compared to the same period last year. The Model Y recorded excellent performances in China, its main market, in the United States, where it grew by 68%, and in Europe, where it became the best-selling vehicle.

To achieve such a feat, the Tesla Model Y was not only able to count on ever-increasing adoption of electric cars, on rising production at Tesla, but above all by the recent successive price reductions from which the vehicle has been able to benefit. Moreover, the Model Y could still see its price decrease here, in particular thanks to local production at the Gigafactory in Berlin.

With its 267,200 sales, the Tesla Model Y is far ahead of the Toyota Corolla and its 256,400 sales, sincethese are the cumulative shipments of 4 different versions. We find in the TOP 5 four other Toyota cars, including the Hilux, the RAV4 and the Camry.

Now that we know that Tesla’s next car, which will start at just $25,000, will be a “small Model Y”, we imagine that it could also rise to the top of the market after its commercialization around the end of 2024 or 2025.
