The Witcher 3: Next-gen update arrives in the last quarter of 2022

After delaying (more than once) the release of the update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red decided to stir up fan anxiety this Thursday (19). In a post on Twitter, the game’s developer revealed that it now has a defined release window: the last quarter of the year. I.e, end of 2022.

New edition of The Witcher 3

The new edition of the game will also arrive for PC sometime in the last three months of the year. For those who have the latest version on computer, PS4 or Xbox One, it will be a free update.

Interestingly, the news comes just a month after CD Projekt Red indefinitely postponed the release of the new version for next-gen consoles. Now, it seems that people already have an idea of the amount of work to be done to be able to hit the hammer in a launch window – remembering that there is still no official date.

Delay history

It is worth remembering that this is not the first time — and it probably won’t be the last — that CDPR has failed to meet deadlines. The next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077, for example, was supposed to be released in September 2021, but ended up being pushed back to the first quarter of this year. In this case, the new deadline has been met.

But unfortunately the same won’t happen with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. At the same time that the postponement of the update for Cyberpunk 2077 was announced, it was also revealed that the wizard game for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S would arrive (delayed) between April and June this year. The project was included in the company’s roadmap.

No problem… is it?

Also last month, during a presentation to investors, Michał Nowakowski, vice president of business development at CD Projekt RED, resolved to calm the nerves not only of those who put money into the company, but also of the general public.

According to the executive, the developer was aware around the news about the Witcher 3 delay and believes the announcement received a disproportionate response from the press and the community. The executive guarantees that the game’s next-gen upgrade is not in such “development hell”.

“That’s not the case, all we’re saying is that we’ve brought the game development inside. Next-gen The Witcher 3 will be finished internally. We’re evaluating our schedule and that requires a little investigation, that’s all we’re saying. No one is saying the game is monumentally late,” explained Nowakowski.

During the meeting, the president of CDPR, Adam Kiciński, evaluated that it should only take 15 in-house developers to finish the work on updating the game for the next generation consoles. If all this is true, it’s conceivable that the studio just needs to put the final touches on the Witcher 3 update and that it shouldn’t be long before we have this content in hand.
