While the partnership between Huawei and Leica ended recently with the release of the Huawei P50 Pro, the German photo company has now teamed up with another Chinese manufacturer: Xiaomi. We had known for several months now thata relationship existed between the two companies, since references to Leica had been spotted in the source code of MIUI, but the partnership is now official.

On Twitter, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun officially confirmed that his company and Leica have “ developed a global strategic partnership in imaging technology “. He adds that in combining a photography legend with our innovation, Xiaomi enters a new era of mobile photography “. The manufacturer’s next high-end smartphone, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, should be the first to take advantage of it.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra will shake the competition in photos

In addition to the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor that was unveiled a few days ago, the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra should benefit froma big leap forward in photo performance compared to the previous generation thanks to Leica know-how. Indeed, the MIUI source code revealed that the smartphone was going to benefit from many Leica filtersincluding in particular the “Leica Monochrom”, the “Leica Monochorm HC”, the “Leica Natural” or the “Leica Vivid”.

The partnership with Leica will not be the only advantage of this Xiaomi 12 Ultra in the photo, since we know that the smartphone will use a new main sensor of almost 1 inch signed Sony, the IMX989. Thanks to its large size, the latter promises to be much more efficient than the ISOCELL GN2 of the previous generation, especially in low light conditions. The rest should be almost identical to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra of 2021, the smartphone designing a maximum 120x digital zoom, a 12-120mm focal length and an f/1.95-4.1 aperture.

Anyway, we should know more about him soon. At the end of his tweet, Lei Jun confirmed that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra would arrive in July 2022. It is therefore expected that it will be presented together with the next Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro, expected in the same period. On the official image, we notice that the position of the hands could indicate that the smartphone is equipped with a shutter button for photos.
