These 3 Bethesda games are free on Steam, perfect to wait for the catalog to arrive

Are you a Skyrim fan? It’s time to discover the origin of the Elder Scrolls saga before the migration of the entire Bethesda catalog on Steam. Luckily: at the moment, three studio games are free on the Valve store, including the gigantic Daggerfall.

At the end of February, Bethesda announced the death of its launcher on PC. After too many performance issues and a poor image with players, the studio decided to migrate your entire catalog to Steam. The operation has not yet taken place — it should normally be the case by tomorrow. For the occasion, some will surely want to return to the origins of the studio which now belongs to Microsoft.

Good news: for a few years now, three games have been available for free download on Steam. Of course, no Fallout 4 or Skyrim in the list, but titles that will delight video game history buffs. Here they are :

  • The Elder Scrolls: Arena
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
  • Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Before the immense Skyrim, there is of course Oblivion and Morrowind, but it is with arena that the Elder Scrolls series began. Released in 1994 with MS-DOS, the game did not get the success it deserved. Indeed, there are already all the elements that made the saga a cornerstone of Western RPG: real-time combat, a vast fantasy world to explore and an absolutely innovative freedom of action for the time.

With daggerfall, Bethesda anchors the recipe in stone and begins to make a name for itself in the industry. The graphics are of course rudimentary, but we can already see the bits of what will make Morrowind the cult game we know today. Finally, more recent since released in 2003, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory uses the codes of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, itself taken from the cult Wolfenstein 3D of 1992. If you want to know about the origins of BJ Blazkowicz, this is where you have to look.
