The next generation of Intel PC processors, codenamed Raptor Lake, will be compatible with the current LGA1700 sockets, but this does not mean that Intel will not take the opportunity to launch a new generation of motherboards with improved capabilities compared to the current one. What improvements can we expect from the Intel Z790 chipsets and the rest for the Core 13 that will appear during this year 2022?

The first thing we have to take into account is that we are in a transition period where the old communication interfaces with components and peripherals have less and less importance and presence in the new systems, while more importance is given to the latest technologies. new as far as their presence is concerned. Let’s see, therefore, what changes we will see in the successor chipsets of the Intel 600.

At the moment none of this is official, but we know that one of the most important changes that Intel has made in its next generation of CPUs for PCs is the DLVR or Linear Voltage Regulator. Which will serve to reduce the consumption of the processor without using a more advanced manufacturing node. Although this function is located within the CPU itself, it will surely require the use of a new motherboard with more advanced power management.

The objective? Being able to achieve a higher clock speed under the same consumption and make each of the Intel Core 13 achieve the double-digit performance increase over the current Core 12. Let’s not forget that the LGA1700 socket actually has 1800 pins and at the moment there are 100 unused pins that could well be used for functionalities in the Intel Z790 chipsets and family for still unknown functions or for the aforementioned DLVR.

If we talk about PCI Express it seems that the number of 3.0 lines will be reduced in favor of 4.0 which will increase in number. So the Z790 will have 20 Gen 4 lines instead of the current 12, the H770 will increase from 12 to 16 and about the B760 it is said that it will have 10. In general, the number of PCI Express lines will be the same as in the 600 series, adding those of all types provided by the chipset. The other important interfaces are the USB ports, where the Z790 will receive a slight upgrade in terms of performance. USB 3.2 2×2 by having 5 interfaces instead of the current 4 while the rest will remain. At the moment we don’t know anything about other legacy interfaces like SATA ports, but we don’t expect any changes.

It is a rather slight improvement in this case. We cannot forget that because they are socket compatible with current Core 12 CPUs, Intel 700 chipsets cannot offer technologies that are not supported by the current standard. So we would really be facing a minor update of the current generation and for a deeper change we will have to wait for Meteor Lake where the chipset itself could be found as one more chip of the first CPU by tiles or chiplets of the company for desktop PCs or desk.
