These are the SSD models that you can install in your Steam Deck

All of us interested are keeping an eye on February 25, which will be the official release date for the Steam Deck. We’re having the last spin on what Valve’s console will look like and set up between us. In the absence of knowing details of real tests of use, there is a point that is still going around in the community: its SSD. We review what options are on the market today to be able to expand the capacity of our portable PC, in case we want to install an SSD in our Steam Deck and thus expand the capacity of our console.

The Valve Steam Deck will be available in 3 capacities, 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB. And at the time of booking, the option to choose one of them was given. With the latest official information from Valve when it announced the official release date, the company made it clear that they will be sent in batches according to confirmation and that under no circumstances can we change the model when confirming the purchase of the one we chose in the reservation, so that if you reserved a 64 GB (eMMC) and now you want to buy a higher capacity, you will not be able to.

Expand the SSD of the Steam Deck

It is already known that Valve’s portable PC will have a connection socket M.2which will be used for consoles with a capacity of 256 GB and 512 GB and in principle those with a capacity of 64 GB will be released and this will use only one eMMC memory – embedded MultiMediaCard- that consume less than an SSD, but also support less capacity and are somewhat slower.

Valve at the time already updated the product’s data sheet clarifying that the M.2 2230 port was not designed or intended for end customers to use to replace or update. Much was said at the time about the reasons why accessibility to the port came in, the difficulty of installing SteamOS and even that Valve commented on it to gain more profit, of everything.

But if you are still looking to expand your console with an M.2 SSD for whatever reason, we remember that if it is for capacity you have the microSD expansion card, but if you are also looking for speed, these are the options that we currently have in the national market .

What SSD models to buy for Steam Deck?

Type M.2 SSD - Form Factor 2230

The Valve Steam Deck, as we have already mentioned, comes with a port M.2 2230this means that the SSD that we can mount will be the one with the smallest form factor of the entire family of M.2 SSD being the M.2 22110 the largest, the 2280 Y 2260 the most common and 2230 as we mentioned the smallest of the formats.

This form factor is not usually usual in stores and although it is compatible with all motherboards and is also with a connector PCIe NVMe it is usually intended for barebones and laptops. And these are some compatible options that you can install -under your responsibility- to the Valve Steam Deck.

Kyoxia: A NVMe M.2 2230 SSDwith a capacity of 256 GB.

WesternDigital: The SSDs that Microsoft’s Surface Laptop uses are hard to see in stock, but it’s a safe buy.

Dell: Their M.2 2230 are the easiest to find on the market, they even sell them through their website. They have a capacity of up to 512GB and they are mounted on the entire range of Alienware and Inspiration.

And so far the SSD models that can be installed on the Steam Deck. Surely with the market release these will be expanded and we will have better options to buy with the impulse of the Valve console.
