In recent weeks, several Tesla owners have accused their car of accelerating on its own. All these owners are at the origin of several accidents having caused no injuries, but material damage. None of the investigations carried out following these accidents have so far revealed any involvement of the car.

Multiplying the abundance of on-board electronics in cars gives Tesla an advantage and a disadvantage. Like any computer, this car benefits from regular updates to add or improve certain functions. This is particularly the case with Autopilot, which is improving year after year, even if fully autonomous driving is not as safe as expected. Conversely, each electronic element presents a risk of a bug. In 2020, Tesla was investigated for an alleged bug: some Tesla owners claimed that their vehicle was accelerating on its own, without reason or intervention.
Three new charges of untimely acceleration of a Tesla
A petition has even been signed and several investigations carried out by Tesla and the NHTSA (the American authority in charge of the automobile). The conclusions of these investigations showed no bug, but, sometimes, a human responsibility. Three years later, new accusations emerge. Three Tesla owners had a car accident. One in Vancouver. Another in New York. And a last Bergen. The common point: everyone accuses their vehicle of having suddenly accelerated.
The first accident took place on a ferry. The Canadian driver claims the car accelerated and damaged other vehicles worth $30,000. After a police investigation, no evidence was detected to confirm the claims of the driver who was fined. Same thing for the Swedish driver. Taxi driver, he lost control of his Model Y in the middle of the street. No injuries here too, but property damage. Police found no evidence the car malfunctioned and fined it. A driver complains against Tesla
Finally, the New York driver is also a taxi driver. According to him, his Model Y would have “jumped forward” for no reason when he released his foot from the brake after making a maneuver in a parking lot, causing a minor accident. He is the only one to have filed a complaint against Tesla, claiming that the car is involved. However, this story is reminiscent of others where drivers simply confused the accelerator pedal with the brake pedal. An investigation will certainly show if the driver is in his right. In the meantime, this accusation tarnishes the image of the best-selling car in the world, all engines combined.
