This is the first SSD compatible for PS5 to expand the internal memory

How can I expand the memory of my PS5?

Exploded PS5

As expected, it will be a system software update that allows the connection of M.2 SSD units in the dedicated slot that includes the PS5 inside. However, this update will initially arrive in beta format, so only users who have signed up for the beta program will be able to install it.

Can I join the beta program?

The beta program selection process simply requires registration on the official website, however, one of the requirements is that the player is located in the United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, France or Germany, so all those Users who are not in any of those countries will not be able to register. That means that in Spain we are left out and we will have to wait for the official publication of the update.

What disk can I connect?

For the first time, Sony has gone into detail about which memory units we can connect to the console, and as we expected, the unit will have to be a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD type. The maximum capacity that we can use will be 4 TB, so we will have more than enough to store dozens of games in our personal library.

It is very important that the unit has a maximum width of 22 millimeters, as Sony has specified that 25 millimeter units will not be compatible with the gap available in the console. To make it easy for you to find available units, the discs usually have similar numbers to 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110, all referring to the 22 millimeters in width.

Regarding performance (fundamental part of the disk), Sony recommends that the units offer at least 5,500 MB / s reads, obtaining better performance if this figure is higher.

Seagate already has its compatible model

FireCuda 530

Seagate has confirmed to VideogameChronicle that its new FireCuda 530 NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD (now is when we take a breath), is fully compatible with the demands of PS5, since it offers reads of up to 7300 MB / s, far exceeding the needs of PS5. Its integrated heatsink fits snugly into the slot for the SSD, a space Seagate describes as very narrow, but well tolerated by your drive.

Prices for this drive range from $ 170 for the cheaper 500GB version to $ 1,050 for the 4TB version. It is important to emphasize that the FireCuda models that we can currently find on Amazon are not ideal for PS5, since they are versions 520 and 510 with lower reading rates than the appropriate model (FireCuda 530).

The importance of the heatsink

Sony has detailed that the units must have a heatsink included, since the high speeds reached by the units require an active dissipation system at all times, so it will be another requirement to take into account when buying an expansion unit. .
