This metaverse offers to chat with the dead in virtual reality

The metaverse will allow you to chat with an avatar of your deceased loved ones through virtual reality. An initiative launched by Somnium Space offers Internet users the opportunity to digitize their identity on the blockchain to access a form of immortality.

metaverse chat dead virtual reality

Ever since Facebook rebranded itself as Meta, “metaverse” has become the new buzzword. Many brands and companies have embarked on digital universes accessible in virtual reality, such as Nike, Adidas or Samsung. According to several studies, the metaverse will soon be the favorite place for Internet users, in particular to buy, exchange or store cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFT).

If many brands are content to follow the movement, some firms offer real innovations. This is the case of Somnium Space, one of the virtual spaces deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. Under the impetus of its founder, Artur Sychov, the company is developing a way to chat with your loved ones after their death.

The metaverse promises immortality in VR

As reported by our colleagues from Vive, Somnium Space is currently developing a mode called “Live Forever”. This initiative offers Internet users to store their conversations, gestures and personality in the form of data. The firm’s technology notably collects the way your fingers, your mouth, your eyes and your whole body move.

Thanks to an impressive quantity of information, an avatar representing the Internet user will be developed. The avatar will chat, trade, and move the same as the original version. This project obviously recalls the most distressing episodes of the Black Mirror series.

This avatar will continue to operate after the death of the user. The relatives of the deceased will then be able to communicate with this ersatz loved one through virtual reality. “Literally, if I die – and I have this data collected – people can come and see me and my children, they can come in, and they can have a conversation with my avatar, with my movements, with my voice”explains Artur Sychov.

This avatar is designed as the perfect copy of a human being. “For the first 10 minutes of chatting with this person, you won’t know they’re actually an artificial intelligence”assures the founder of Somnium Space.

This data collection program will be launched later this year. The “Live Forever” function will be disabled by default. You will have to activate it manually. The first functional avatars are planned for next year. Unsurprisingly, this virtual immortality will be billed through a monthly subscription.
