The first barrier that we have at our disposal on the Internet to protect the information that we store on the different platforms that we use on a daily basis is the password, a password that must be made up of numbers, upper and lower case letters as well as symbols. However, for most users it is easier use the same password in all of them. Then what happens happens and the last example is found in Norton Password Manager.
Norton Password Manager is a password manager available for Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera), Firefox, Safari as well as iOS and Android. User account and password data is stored on Norton’s servers and is available on all devices up to date at all times. This password manager, like others, not only allows us to store passwords securely, but also allows us to generate strong passwords.
A few weeks ago, the LastPass servers were compromised exposing the usernames and passwords of all users of this platform. Fortunately, Norton’s password manager hasn’t suffered a security breach like LastPass, but according to the company, it is recommending that some users change the master password and turn on two-step authentication.
According to the company, in early December, the servers detected a high volume unsuccessful login attempts. The company claims that these login attempts occurred using data that had been obtained through the Dark Web, data such as email accounts and passwords leaked from attacks on other companies, not on Norton’s servers.
The company does not disclose the number of accounts accessed. At that moment, reset passwords of affected accounts by inviting users to create a new one. In addition, it recommends that all users change the access data to prevent future access and, incidentally, activate two-step authentication. In addition, it is also advisable to change the passwords of the websites stored on this platform as an additional precautionary measure.
Are online password managers safe?
In Internet nothing is certain. Although the security problem of Norton Password Manager is not the same as that of LastPass, once again we find ourselves with a problem derived from the storage of personal data on internet servers. If we want to always have all our data accessible on the network, the best and only option we have today to prevent anyone from having access to this data is to use two-step authentication.
The two step authentication It is a method that all the large platforms offer optionally and that adds an additional security measure in the form of SMS or email that includes a code that we must enter in the corresponding website when we are accessing from a computer that is not the usual one. This way, if someone tries to access it, if they don’t have access to that code, they will never be able to access the content.
In addition, we must try, as far as possible, avoid using the same password on all the websites that we regularly visit, since the friends of others are aware of this use and can test access to other platforms with that data, as has happened with Norton Password Manager.
