This will be the AMD Ryzen processors of the future

In the last hours, they have appeared new information about the different processors that AMD plans to launch under the Zen architecture 5, not only the future Ryzen, but also the EPYC and Threadripper, which is why we have decided to compile this data in an orderly and understandable way so that you can get an idea about what these processors will be like and what they will bring to the table. Will Lisa Su’s company continue the streak of good work in terms of processors or will it end with the next generation? Only time will tell.

Although the new data does not come from AMD, but from the MLID channel, we have considered it interesting enough to share it with you. As far as is known, the design of Zen 5 would be carried out by the same team that made Zen 2 and it would have been in the AMD labs since then with its engineers working around the clock. The complication? They do not prepare a variant, but as with Zen 4 we are going to have three different ones. On the one hand, the conventional one, the one that is optimized by area and not by clock speed and finally the one that makes use of V-Cache. However, about this variant we do not have much information at the moment.

What do the new rumors say about AMD’s Zen 5 CPUs?

At the moment we have to take them with a grain of salt, but the design of Zen 5 would be being carried out under two different manufacturing nodes and that is because AMD does not want to play everything at TSMC’s 3 nm and that is why they are developing a version also for 4 nm. Which is complicated by the fact that they don’t use the same design rules.

That is to say, that depending on how the N3 node of the Taiwanese foundry was developed, the Zen 5 product range will evolve in one way or another, but the most advanced manufacturing process would be used to increase above all the number of processor cores, but not to improve the architecture regarding the chips under the N4 node.

possible release date

The planned release date is the first half of 2024However, we must not forget that AMD launches a new generation of Zen every two years and could move to the second semester. Of course, what they would look for with an earlier launch than usual is nothing more than taking a temporary advantage over Intel and having the best architecture on the market in terms of performance. That is, they plan to preempt the launch of Arrow Lake.

Performance increase over Zen 5

As for the performance increase, it is expected to be between 15% and 26% per clock cycle compared to Zen 4. This improvement is expected especially thanks to the fact that the control unit can handle more instructions simultaneously. Let’s not forget that we already knew about an improvement in the FrontEnd of the processor and, therefore, in the phases of capturing and decoding the instructions. This implies an increase in the number of Backend units, which are the execution units that process the instructions. However, these would continue to be those of Zen 4 and the clock speed increase would not exceed 10%.

Turin

It is the code name for AMD EPYC server chips, which will have the following specifications:

  • 16 total CCDs with 8 cores each for a total of 128 cores.
    • There is a variant that uses CCD with 12 cores each to reach the 192 cores in total. said variant will be based on Zen 5C, which is an area-optimized kernel.
  • Support for up to twelve channels of DDR5 memory, for now will support DDR5-6400 memory, although it is expected to have DDR5-7200 support also without overclocking, but this is above the planned specification.
  • It does not inherit the IOD of EPYC Genoa, the current generation, but one that will use a new one that will implement a Xilinx Machine Learning Acceleratorso this would be AMD’s bet on AI and not adopt Intel’s AMX instructions for Deep and Machine Learning
  • AMD would plan to use accelerators for certain tasks that replace entire cores on the inside, but they would be intended as semi-custom models for specific customers.

AMD Threadripper

Sorano

It is the code name for the Threadripper futures, it would be a cut version of Turin for the SP6 socket designed for workstations, but at the moment we do not know completely what changes it will have with respect to the AMD EPYC. Of all the processors based on the Zen 5 architecture, it is the one about which the least information has been leaked at the moment.

Granite Ridge, the AMD Ryzen based on Zen 5

It is the chip that will be mounted in the AM5 sockets and, therefore, the one that is intended for the PC.

  • The number of cores would not increase compared to the current Ryzen 700.
  • AMD may consider using all three CCD types, not just the standard and also not the V-Cache version, but also using Zen 5C cores. What will allow different combinations.
  • They would bring a new IOD that would allow for not only faster DDR5, but also a GPU based on RDNA 3 instead of RDNA 2 and the inclusion of a Xilinx AI accelerator. Which would be the same as in other chips based on the architecture.

This would be all for now, as you can see, Lisa Su’s company would not have lifted its foot off the accelerator and will continue to be as competitive as it is now.
