Today it is very easy to have a fast and secure Wi-Fi network, but unfortunately it is also relatively simple. make mistakes that can ruin it almost instantly, and the worst thing is that we will not always be aware of it. If this happens, it is very likely that we will end up thinking about it and that we will fatten a problem that, in reality, is very simple and easy to solve.
As this is something more and more frequent, I have decided to share with you a simple guide with three things that many people do wrong, and that can make a Wi-Fi network that works wonderfully become a disaster. Keep in mind that the simple fact that one of these errors occurs it will be a serious problemso if all three are accumulated at the same time you can imagine what will happen.
If after finishing reading the article you have any questions you can leave it in the comments and we will help you solve it. Without further ado, let’s get down to business.
1.-Place obstacles and sources of interference near the router
It may be that, at the time your network was installed, you chose the best possible place for the installation of the router, but this may change over time. Let’s face it, we all change the decoration of our home, and we also remove and put new appliances, move mirrors and other objects. In the end, it is likely that all this will end up affecting the router and our Wi-Fi network.
Mirrors can greatly reduce the range of the Wi-Fi signal, since they make the waves bounce, and certain appliances generate interference which can also reduce the quality of the signal. Other important modifications in our home can end up blocking or reducing the range of the signal, so we must be careful and think a bit before introducing changes of this type in our home.
2.-Giving the password carelessly and not changing it
It is one of the most common and serious errors that I have seen, and this can lead to very curious situations. When we receive visitors, it is normal for us to give our Wi-Fi password so that they can connect to the network. However, we must be aware that this can give us problems, especially if those visitors are not people you really trust.
I remember the case of a friend who gave the Wi-Fi password to a technician who came to check his gas and needed to send an email. A short time later he noticed that his Internet connection was getting worse and worse, and in the end we discovered that he had three intruders on his network. It seems that the technician he did not hesitate to “sell” the password to some neighbors. I also know cases of people who have been placed for hours on the stairs of the portal to “steal Wi-Fi”.
The ideal is to have a guest network if we are going to receive visits frequently, and if we do not have a network of this type, it is recommended change the password of our Wi-Fi network with some frequency, and do it whenever we notice that it starts to go wrong without apparent justification, since it is most likely that we will have unwanted guests.
3.-Not using the standard or the most appropriate band
A Wi-Fi connection can work with different standards. Each standard has specific characteristics and offers a specific level of performance. For example, the Wi-Fi 4 standard is slower than the Wi-Fi 5 standard, and much slower than the Wi-Fi 6 standard, but it has a longer range, which can make an important difference in specific cases. Wi-Fi 5 offers higher speeds, although it is true that it has a shorter range.
The band we use also has an influence, and not only on performance and range, but also on the quality and stability of the signal. With the 5 GHz band we will enjoy a higher performance and a more stable connection with less interference, while with the 2.4 GHz band the opposite will happen.
