Like any social network, TikTok is subject to many criticisms, especially about the sometimes problematic content it hosts. These unfortunately proliferate on the application, partly because of the multiple and dangerous challenges launched by the players. At the end of 2021, a moderator had sounded the alarm by filing a complaint against the social network, after having viewed too many shocking videos. Lately, the platform has also suffered the wrath of the authorities who accuse it of disseminating videos promoting various eating disorders.

To combat this scourge, TikTok has announced a UGC update that permanently ban this type of content. “We are making this change, in consultation with eating disorder experts, researchers and doctors, because we understand that people can struggle with unhealthy eating habits and behaviors without having been diagnosed with an eating disorder”the app said.

TikTok improves its protection of transgender people

Another community particularly targeted on social networks by hateful behavior, transgender people are also included in the TikTok press release. The latter are indeed regularly prey to comments where they are misgendered, that is to say which lend them the wrong kind which was attributed to them at birth, even who call them by their deadname, the first name they had before their transition. In its effort to make the comment space a more benevolent place, the social network now prohibits this type of practice.

Moreover, the same is true comments that are misogynistic or that promote conversion therapy, of which women and homosexuals are victims. Finally, TikTok announced the publication of several videos in the Discover tab under the hashtag #SaferTogether, which aims to help users better understand the content offered to them. “We use a combination of technology and people to identify and remove violations of our TOS, and we will continue to train our automated systems and security teams to enforce our policies”said the social network.
