TikTok is being sued by one of its content moderators. According to the complaint, he was traumatized after watching shocking content involving acts of violence, and even cannibalism.
The job of moderator on social networks is often considered one of the toughest in the world. As can be read in the complaint filed against the video-sharing platform and its parent company ByteDance by a traumatized moderator, TikTok’s 10,000 content moderators are exposed to a daily regimen of child pornography, suicides, rapes, beheadings, school shootings and even animal mutilations. With such regular consumption of violent content, it’s no wonder that half of moderators suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and are at risk of mental illness.
Employees who work on content moderation describe their 12 hour working days in which they have to watch hundreds of mostly shocking videos without interruption, with only two 15-minute breaks and a one-hour lunch break. Last year, other Facebook moderators had already accused their company of putting their lives in danger.

TikTok moderator sues social network
The frantic pace and the expected rotation of these moderators imposed by the social network make them have a maximum of 25 seconds to judge a video before you have to move on to the next video. Some would also monitor several videos at the same time, with screens displaying 3 to 10 videos simultaneously.
Candie Frazier, content moderator at Tiktok, therefore filed a complaint against her company with a class action lawsuit. She would suffer today from post traumatic stress disorder because of all the disturbing videos she had to watch. The complaint states that ” the complainant has trouble sleeping and when she sleeps she has horrible nightmares “.
The complainant now demands compensation for psychological injuries suffered and a court order forcing the company to create a medical fund for moderators. Often, the psychological follow-up of moderators is not properly provided by companies, so it is hoped that Candie Frazier’s complaint will lead to better working conditions for employees.
