Twitter adds auto-generated captions to your videos

Taking a step forward towards the accessibility of its platform, since yesterday, and with an immediate rather than progressive implementation, Twitter has begun to implement an option with which we can generate some automatically generated subtitles on videos uploaded in the social network.

A function that is available for both Android and iOS devices, and even through the client for web browsers. In the case of the application for mobile devices, subtitles will appear automatically when you start watching a muted video, although we will have the option to configure them to be able to use or remove them even after raising the volume of our device again.

Thus, all the videos uploaded to Twitter after the publication of this article will already have this integrated function for the automatic generation of subtitles. However, as pointed out by The Verge, despite being a function still in the testing phase, at the moment it seems that there is no type of direct interaction with which we can report that some subtitles are inaccurate, greatly limiting the potential and learning capacity for this tool.

Even so, a Twitter spokesperson assured the outlet that the company “you are always looking for ways to improve these accessibility features«. The introduction of automatic video captions is undoubtedly a giant step forward for Twitter, not only at the internal milestone level, but also vis-à-vis the rest of the main social networks.

In addition, it will certainly be a function with great acceptance among its fans and detractors. And it is that just a year ago, some users criticized the company for introducing a function such as audio tweets, focused exclusively on this auditory format, without supporting them with any type of accessibility tool. Something that actually ended up resulting in Twitter’s admission of not having a dedicated accessibility team at the time.

What is not clear at the moment is if this functionality plans to remain only in the videos, or if listening to these criticisms, we could soon see an expansion for other formats present on Twitter.
