Actress Michelle Yeoh in a scene from American Born Chinese

Last night was the big movie party in Hollywood and as expected Everything at once everywhere became the big winner of the night. Not only did it win the most precious award, that of best film, but it also managed to score 6 more statuettes, including several that bore the names of part of its cast. Precisely two of his protagonists will appear on the screen again shortly and that is that the platform Disney+ has a new series ready with them. This is what we know at the moment.

Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, with the Oscar for Disney+

As we said, Everything at once everywhere has been proclaimed with the great film of the Oscars 2023. After collecting numerous recognitions in previous awards, last night he put the icing on the cake taking the statuette for Best Picture, Director (for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Original Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan) and Leading Actress (michelle yeoh).

They are not just any prizes: Everything at once everywhere undoubtedly represents a revolt within the often rigid structure of the academy, which has awarded a film that talks about multiverses and with a setup that is anything but traditional. It’s surreal, frenetic and funny. It’s all that years ago we never thought it would be rewarded at the most important film ceremony in the world.

Not only that. This film has also meant the first Oscar for an Asian woman, Michelle Yeoh -who saw the statuette in danger days ago due to some controversial statements on her social networks “against” Cate Blanchett, the other great nominee-, a Malaysian actress in a state of grace who we have previously enjoyed in a Marvel movie and now he moves again in another role of Science fiction precisely with his award-winning partner Ke Huy Quan in the latest from Disney.

American Born Chinese, the new series of the streaming service

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan will thus be the protagonists of a new series that the Disney+ content platform has already practically closed for its premiere. The name of the production is American Born Chinese and is based on a graphic novel written and drawn by Gene Luen Yang.

The story, which premiered in 2006, puts us on the trail of Jing Wang, a teenager born in the US, the son of Chinese immigrants, who faces various challenges and problems of culture shock with white society. So at first nothing looks extraordinary but the grace is that we will soon see how fantasy overtones (and a lot of action) related to Chinese mythology are intermingled in the story as a result of the friendship that Wang will establish with another Asian boy who does not have the problems that he experiences with his identity .

At the moment Disney+ has revealed a couple of brief previews in which we can get an idea of the aesthetics and style of what we will enjoy:

the new series American Born Chinese will be released on May 22 in the catalog of the content platform. Surely after last night’s ceremony, Disney+ is already rubbing their hands…
